Objective: To provide more oppurtinities for blacks through the creation and support from the National Urban League.

Education
  • Attended Kentucky State College and joined the Army specialist training program
  • Received MSW at University of Minnesota
  • Attended Harvard University from 1960-1961

Work Experience
  • Served in an anti-aircraft company of African American soldiers with white officers during WWII.
  • Became University Lecturer in 1954 and was Dean of School Social Work at Atlanta University.
  • Active in NAACP and became president of its Georgia branch.
  • Was the executive director of the National Urban League in 1960-1971.
  • Joined a campaign protesting against the Vietnam War.
  • Author of To Be Equal (1964) and Beyond Racism (1969).

Accomplishments
  • Provided better communities for blacks.
  • Brought blacks and whites together in time of intense racial friction.
  • Made new programs to provide equal opportunities for blacks' employment, housing and education.

Award
  • Awarded the Medal of Freedom for nation's highest civilian honor in 1969.
