Objective: To provide more oppurtinities for blacks through the creation and support from the National Urban League.
Education
- Attended Kentucky State College and joined the Army specialist training program
- Received MSW at University of Minnesota
- Attended Harvard University from 1960-1961
Work Experience
- Served in an anti-aircraft company of African American soldiers with white officers during WWII.
- Became University Lecturer in 1954 and was Dean of School Social Work at Atlanta University.
- Active in NAACP and became president of its Georgia branch.
- Was the executive director of the National Urban League in 1960-1971.
- Joined a campaign protesting against the Vietnam War.
- Author of To Be Equal (1964) and Beyond Racism (1969).
Accomplishments
- Provided better communities for blacks.
- Brought blacks and whites together in time of intense racial friction.
- Made new programs to provide equal opportunities for blacks' employment, housing and education.
Award
- Awarded the Medal of Freedom for nation's highest civilian honor in 1969.
